Reimagining financial onboarding as a personalised, AI-powered conversation
I was tasked by Moneybox with redesigning the "fact-find" - the data-gathering process behind their new AI-powered financial planning feature, Aurora. The brief was to turn this from a static, form-filling exercise into a personalised, AI-powered conversation: a dynamic, goal-led experience that captures the same essential information - employment, income, outgoings, debt, savings and goals, while feeling intuitive, collaborative, and genuinely valuable from the first interaction.

THE PROBLEM
The flow demands more effort than it gives back
Users are forced to translate messy, real-world goals into a rigid, pre-set sequence of screens that never adapts to what they've actually told the system - turning onboarding into a cognitive chore rather than a natural conversation.
The experience feels the same for everyone
Every user moves through identical screens in an identical order, with no sense of personalisation or momentum - resulting in a journey that feels impersonal and mechanical rather than tailored to the individual.
There's no emotional hook to keep users going
The existing flow jumps straight to numbers without ever connecting to why the user cares, stripping out the motivational context needed to sustain engagement - a key driver of the significant drop-off seen before plan creation.
I proposed an adaptive, goal-led experience where users shape their plan through dialogue - with AI and open banking doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes.
Aurora opens with a single, human question - inviting users to describe their life in their own words. This reframes onboarding as self-reflection, not data entry, creating an immediate sense of relevance and emotional engagement.
A guided, conversational flow helps users articulate their financial priorities, like reducing stress and saving for a home, while reinforcing understanding with empathetic responses.
By pulling in open banking data, Aurora instantly builds a clear picture of the user’s finances - framing it within a conversational interface that invites review, builds trust, and gives users control to confirm or correct their information before moving forward.
Rather than feeling like an afterthought, Aurora brings users back to the goals defined at the start of the journey, reflecting them clearly within a conversational interface. This moment reinforces intent, builds continuity, and gives users a chance to review, adjust, or confirm their priorities before moving forward.
Aurora brings everything together, summarising the user’s financial situation, restating their goals, and showing exactly how those ambitions translate into a realistic monthly plan. By tying actions to outcomes with clear timelines, it turns abstract intentions into something concrete, helping users feel confident taking the next step.
